ChemTrade supplies bentonite for drilling, piling, foundry and feed work across Malaysia. Sold also as montmorillonite or bentonite clay, it is the swelling clay behind drilling mud, piling slurry and foundry green sand. We carry it in 25 kg bags, with Chinese, Indian and Indonesian material available.
Sodium bentonite is the high swelling type, and it is what drilling fluid and piling slurry are built from. Calcium bentonite swells far less and goes into absorbent and binder work instead. Send us the application, or the specification if a consultant has set one, and we will check what can be sourced against it.
This is industrial material, sold by the pallet and by the tonne. What we bag is powder, so ask first if the job needs granules or compacted pellets.
Keep it dry, because a bag that has taken up moisture has lost the swelling capacity you are paying for. Handling is dusty, so gloves and a mask are needed. Ask for the safety data sheet with your enquiry.

Safety and handling
Store bags dry and off the floor. Moisture is the thing that ruins bentonite, because a bag that has taken up water has already used the swelling capacity the buyer is paying for. Handle with gloves and a dust mask and keep charging areas ventilated. The dust irritates the eyes and the respiratory tract, and like any mined clay it carries some respirable crystalline silica, so the producer's safety data sheet is the reference for exposure control.
Common questions about bentonite clay
What is the difference between sodium and calcium bentonite?
How much it swells. Sodium bentonite takes up several times its own volume in water and builds a gel, which is why drilling fluid and piling slurry are made from it. Calcium bentonite swells much less and is used where absorption and binding matter more than viscosity, such as feed pellets and dry blends. If you are unsure which your process needs, tell us what it has to do.
Which grade do I need for bored piling or a diaphragm wall?
Sodium bentonite, and the mix design is normally quoted as a percentage by weight of water rather than as a product grade. Send us the design, the volume of slurry the job needs and the delivery point, and we will quote the tonnage against it. If your consultant has specified a swell index or a Marsh funnel reading, send that too.
Do you supply drilling grade bentonite to API 13A or OCMA specification?
Send us the specification and we will check what can be sourced against it, rather than tell you our standard bag meets it. Both are producer specifications, and API 13A runs through a licensing programme, so the certificate belongs to the mill that tests to it and not to a trading house. Say which section applies and we will confirm with the quotation what documentation the material carries.
Do you supply granular bentonite or pellets?
What we carry in bags is powder. Granules and compacted pellets are made products, so tell us the form, the size and the quantity and we will check what can be sourced before quoting. Earthing backfill and pond sealing are the two jobs that usually ask for them.
What packing is available, and can you supply by the pallet?
Bentonite is stocked in 25 kg bags and sold by the pallet or by the tonne. We buy from more than one origin, so if a job needs bulk bags or another size, ask and we will check what can be arranged rather than making you break down pallets on site.
Can you send a safety data sheet and a certificate of analysis?
Ask for them with your enquiry and we will request them from the source being quoted and confirm what is available before you raise a purchase order. Both documents come from the producer, so which figures a certificate carries depends on the mill. Confirm anything your process depends on against that document rather than against a web page.
How is bentonite priced?
By the tonne, on enquiry. It is a mined material and the freight is a real part of what it costs delivered, so a published figure would be wrong for most enquiries and stale for the rest. Send the grade, the quantity and the delivery point and we will quote a current price with a stated validity period.
