Charge type is the first thing to settle, because the two halves of this range do different jobs. Cationic polyacrylamide dewaters sludge and organic solids, which covers sewage, palm oil mill effluent, food processing and rubber effluent. Anionic polyacrylamide settles inorganic suspended solids, so it goes into mineral processing, quarry and sand wash water and drinking water clarification.
Within a charge type, grades differ by charge density and molecular weight, and those are what a jar test on your own stream actually decides. Send us the application and the stream you are treating and we will propose a starting grade rather than sell you the first bag on the shelf.
A flocculant is not a coagulant and does not replace one. Alum, poly aluminium chloride and ferric salts neutralise particle charge at rapid mix, and polyacrylamide then bridges those particles into a floc big enough to settle or press. Most plants dose both.

Store sealed in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight, and keep bags closed because the powder takes up moisture from the air and cakes. Handle with gloves and safety glasses and avoid raising dust. Spilled powder becomes extremely slippery the moment it gets wet, so sweep it up dry rather than hosing it down, which is a real slip hazard on a wet plant floor.
Common questions about polyacrylamide flocculant
Should I order cationic or anionic polyacrylamide?
As a rule, cationic for dewatering sludge and organic solids, anionic for settling inorganic suspended solids. If you are pressing sewage, palm oil mill or food processing sludge, start cationic. If you are clarifying quarry or sand wash water, mineral slurry or drinking water after an alum or iron dose, start anionic. Tell us the stream and we will narrow it before you buy a pallet of the wrong charge.
What is the difference between a coagulant and a flocculant?
They are two different steps and most plants need both. A coagulant such as alum, poly aluminium chloride or a ferric salt neutralises the charge on fine particles so they stop repelling each other, and it goes in first at rapid mix. A flocculant such as polyacrylamide then bridges those destabilised particles into a floc large enough to settle or filter, and it goes in later under slow mixing. Dosing a flocculant without a coagulant usually underperforms, which is the most common reason a polymer gets blamed for not working.
Which grade and molecular weight do you supply?
Charge density and molecular weight vary by grade, and both are stated on the certificate of analysis for the grade you would actually receive rather than published here, because a figure that is right for one grade is wrong for the next. If your plant already runs a grade, give us the code or the data sheet and we will match it. If not, send the application and we will propose a starting grade.
Do I need to run a jar test first?
Yes, if you can. Charge type, charge density and molecular weight all interact with your particular stream, so the only reliable way to pick a grade is to test two or three candidates on your own effluent and compare floc size, settling rate and cake dryness. It is worth doing before you commit to volume, and we can supply sample quantities for it.
How much polymer do I need per tonne of sludge?
That depends on the solids content and the nature of the sludge, so any figure quoted without seeing your stream would be a guess. Powder polymer is dosed as a dilute solution, typically well under one percent, and consumption is worked out from the jar test rather than from a table. Send us your flow rate and solids figures with your enquiry and we will size the order against them.
What packing is available, and do you supply liquid as well as powder?
Powder in 15 kg, 20 kg and 25 kg bags, and anionic emulsion in 25 kg pails for plants that dose liquid. We work with several sources, so if you need a different pack size or a bulk bag for a large makeup unit, ask and we will tell you what can be arranged.
