Magnesium Oxide (MgO) Supplier in Malaysia
- Also known as
- Magnesia
- MgO
- Periclase
- Mag Oxide
ChemTrade supplies magnesium oxide to industrial buyers across Malaysia in 20 kg and 50 kg bags. Ordered as MgO or magnesia, it is the alkali for work that needs a slow base rather than a fast one. It lifts and holds pH without the exotherm and the handling risk that caustic soda and quicklime bring.
The specification that decides everything is calcination level. Light burned magnesium oxide, sold in the trade as caustic calcined magnesia, is the reactive grade, and it goes into effluent neutralisation, rubber compounding, fertiliser and magnesia cement. Dead burned magnesia is fired hotter until it is close to inert, which is what a refractory lining needs and what a dosing process cannot use.
We hold a technical grade at 90% MgO in 50 kg bags, and a high purity light burned grade of Japanese origin in 20 kg bags. Assay, loss on ignition and fineness sit on the batch certificate rather than in one number here, because they move with the grade and with the source. Dead burned and fused grades are sourced to order against your specification.
Note that we supply the powder, not finished magnesia panels. If the project needs MgO board, this is the raw material behind it rather than the sheet. Tell us the grade, the assay you work to and the tonnage, and we will quote.

Magnesium Oxide grades and forms
We supply several forms to suit different formulating and dosing setups. If you need a size that is not listed, ask us.
| Grade | Form | Assay | Typical use | Packing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Light burned magnesium oxide, technical grade | white powder | 90% MgO | The volume grade and the cheapest way to buy magnesium by the tonne. Goes into fertiliser blends and acid soil correction as a slow release magnesium source, effluent and process stream neutralisation, and oxysulfate and oxychloride cement systems. | 50 kg bag |
| Light burned magnesium oxide, high purity | fine white powder | confirmed on COA | Japanese origin, produced from seawater rather than mined magnesite, and specified on surface area and particle size as much as on assay. The standard acid acceptor in chloroprene and halogenated rubber compounding, and the grade to ask for where iron or grit would show in the finished article. | 20 kg bag |
| Dead burned magnesia | sintered granules or powder | — | Fired above 1500 °C until it is close to inert, which is exactly what a furnace lining, a ramming mix or a crucible needs and what a dosing process cannot use. Sourced to order against your sizing and MgO minimum. | bag or bulk bag |

Magnesium Oxide applications
Safety and handling
Store the bags closed, dry and off the floor. Magnesium oxide takes up moisture and carbon dioxide from the air and slowly turns into magnesium hydroxide and carbonate, which costs available MgO and therefore dosing strength and reactivity. It is not corrosive, but the dry powder is alkaline and irritating, so use gloves, safety glasses and a dust mask when charging or sweeping, and use local extraction where handling is open. No licence is required to buy it.
Common questions about magnesium oxide
Which grade do I need, light burned or dead burned?
It follows whether you want the magnesium oxide to react or not to react. Light burned, also called caustic calcined magnesia, is the reactive grade for neutralising, rubber compounding, fertiliser and magnesia cement. Dead burned is fired far hotter until it is close to inert, which is what a furnace lining or a crucible needs and what a dosing line cannot use. Describe the process and we will point at the right one.
What MgO assay do you supply?
The technical grade runs at 90% MgO and the light burned high purity grade higher, with the figure on the batch certificate of analysis rather than quoted here as a single number. Loss on ignition and fineness are on the same certificate. If your specification sets a minimum MgO, a residue limit on a given mesh or a surface area range, send it with the enquiry and we will source against it.
Is magnesium oxide the same as magnesium hydroxide?
No. Magnesium oxide is the calcined material, and magnesium hydroxide is what it becomes once it takes up water, which happens slowly in a damp store and quickly in a slurry. They are not interchangeable by weight, because the hydroxide carries the extra water, so a dose worked out for one is wrong for the other. Tell us which your process is set up for.
Is this the powder used in MgO board and magnesia cement?
Yes, it is the raw material rather than the finished sheet. We supply magnesium oxide powder in 20 and 50 kg bags to panel and flooring manufacturers, not cut magnesia board, so if you are looking for panels you want a building materials supplier. If you are batching an oxysulfate or oxychloride mix, tell us the binder ratio and we will advise on the grade.
Can you supply against a feed, food or pharmacopoeial specification?
Ask at enquiry and it is sourced against the specification you name rather than substituted from the technical grade, which is not an equivalent in a feed or food process even where the chemistry looks the same. We supply the bagged raw material for feed, food and pharmaceutical manufacture, not finished tablets or capsules.
Which grade goes into a fertiliser blend, and how does it compare to kieserite?
The 90% light burned technical grade. Against kieserite at a standard 25% MgO it carries about three and a half times the magnesium per tonne, so the freight and the handling per unit of magnesium are lower, and it releases slowly rather than washing through on the first heavy rain. The trade off is that it is not water soluble, so it corrects a deficiency over a season rather than feeding a fertigation line, where magnesium nitrate or sulphate is the right choice.
What packing is available, and do I need a licence?
No licence is needed. Magnesium oxide is not a scheduled poison and not restricted for transport. Standard packing is a 20 kg or 50 kg bag, and bulk bags are available on the refractory and volume grades, so tell us the tonnage and how the site handles bags and we will quote the packing that lands cheapest.
What does magnesium oxide cost?
It depends on the grade far more than on the quantity, because a 90% technical powder and a high purity light burned grade are different materials. Magnesia also tracks its own market and the freight behind it, so we quote a current price with a stated validity period instead of publishing one that goes stale. Send the assay and tonnage for a figure.
