Sodium Nitrate (NaNO3) Supplier in Malaysia
- Also known as
- NaNO3
- Chile Saltpetre
- Nitrate of Soda
- E251
ChemTrade supplies sodium nitrate to industrial and food manufacturers across Malaysia in 25 kg bags, technical or food grade. Chinese and German origin material is what we hold most often.
Sodium nitrate is NaNO3, also traded as Chile saltpetre or nitrate of soda, and in food as additive E251. It is not sodium nitrite: nitrite is NaNO2, additive E250, and the two behave differently in a cure. We stock both, so check which one your specification names before you order.
Both grades run at 99% minimum. Technical grade goes into glass and ceramic batches, heat treatment salt baths and effluent dosing. Food grade is the slow acting cure salt for bacon, ham and dry sausage, and is controlled against food use limits that technical grade is not.
It is a Class 5.1 oxidiser under UN 1498, so it does not burn on its own but will feed a fire and has to be kept away from combustibles. No poisons licence is needed to buy it in Malaysia. Tell us the grade and quantity and we will quote.

Sodium Nitrate grades and forms
We supply several forms to suit different formulating and dosing setups. If you need a size that is not listed, ask us.
| Grade | Form | Assay | Typical use | Packing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Technical grade sodium nitrate | white crystals | ≥ 99% | Sold as technical or industrial grade, the two names mean the same material. Goes into glass and ceramic batches as a refining and decolourising agent, into molten salt baths for metal heat treatment, and into effluent treatment as a nitrate source. | 25 kg bag |
| Food grade sodium nitrate | white crystals or powder | ≥ 99% | Additive code E251, used in the slow cure of bacon, ham and dry cured sausage, where it acts as a nitrate reservoir over a long cure. Specify food grade at enquiry and tell us what documentation you need with it. | 25 kg bag |
| Sodium nitrate powder | fine white powder | ≥ 99% | Dissolves faster and blends more evenly than crystal, which suits dry blending and any batch dosed by weight into a mixer rather than into water. | 25 kg bag |
| Fertiliser grade sodium nitrate | white crystals | ≥ 99% | Traded as nitrate of soda, roughly 16% nitrogen in fully nitrate form, so it is available to the plant without waiting on soil conversion. Used in blends and in fertigation. | 25 kg bag |

Sodium Nitrate applications
Safety and handling
- Classification
- oxidiser, may intensify fire, harmful if swallowed
- UN number
- 1498
- Hazard class
- 5.1
Store cool and dry, well away from combustible material, organics, reducing agents and powdered metals. Sodium nitrate does not burn on its own but it will feed a fire that has already started, and it is hygroscopic enough to cake in an open bag in Malaysian humidity, so keep bags closed and off the floor. Handle with gloves and safety goggles, and keep it apart from any acid. It ships as UN 1498, Class 5.1, packing group III, which sets the labelling and segregation your forwarder has to follow.
Common questions about sodium nitrate
What is the difference between sodium nitrate and sodium nitrite?
They are two different chemicals and they are not interchangeable. Sodium nitrate is NaNO3, additive code E251, and in a cure it works slowly because it has to convert to nitrite first. Sodium nitrite is NaNO2, additive code E250, and it acts directly and much faster. We supply both, so tell us which one your specification calls for and we will quote that one rather than the nearest thing.
Do I need a licence to buy sodium nitrate in Malaysia?
Not for the material itself. Sodium nitrate is not a scheduled poison here and we do not require a poisons licence to supply it. What does apply is the transport classification, UN 1498, Class 5.1, packing group III, which determines how the consignment must be labelled and segregated in transit. If your own sector licenses what you make with it, that stays your responsibility.
Can you supply food grade for meat curing?
Yes, food grade sodium nitrate at 99% minimum, in 25 kg bags. It is the slow acting cure salt, so it suits long cures like bacon, ham and dry sausage rather than anything you need cured in a day. Say food grade when you enquire and tell us what documentation your process requires, and we will confirm what comes with the batch before you commit.
Is the technical grade the same purity as the food grade?
Both run at 99% minimum NaNO3, so the headline assay is the same. The difference is the trace impurity profile and the documentation: food grade is controlled and certified against food use limits, technical grade is not, and it must not be substituted into food. If your process sits between the two, send us the specification and we will source against it.
What packing does it come in?
25 kg bags as standard, which is what both grades move in. We work with several producers, so if you need a different size or a jumbo bag for a larger batch, ask and we will check what is available.
Where does it come from?
Chinese and German origin material is what we hold most often. Origin affects price and lead time more than it affects the chemistry, so if you have a preference or an approved source list, say so with your enquiry.
How is it priced?
Prices move, so we quote a current figure with a stated validity period rather than publish one that goes out of date. Send the grade, the form and the quantity with your delivery location and we will come back with a price.
