Common questions about lanolin
Is lanolin the same as wool wax or wool grease?
Yes. Wool wax, wool fat, adeps lanae and lanolina all name the same wool-derived wax, and wool grease is the trade term more often used for the crude material recovered before refining. Refined and deodorised material is what formulators normally charge into a batch, so state the grade rather than the informal name alone.
Is lanolin alcohol or lanolin oil the same as lanolin?
No. Lanolin alcohol is the alcohol fraction taken from lanolin, lanolin oil is the liquid fraction separated from it, and ethoxylated lanolin is a chemically modified derivative. Each is a separate article with its own specification and handling, so request the derivative by name when that is what the formulation calls for.
What is the difference between anhydrous and hydrous lanolin?
Anhydrous lanolin is supplied essentially water free and is the standard raw material a formulator weighs into a batch. Hydrous lanolin already carries roughly 25 to 30 per cent water, which suits ointment bases where part of the water phase is pre-incorporated.
