Malt Extract Supplier in Malaysia
- Also known as
- Barley Malt Extract
Malt extract supplier in Malaysia for bakery, biscuit, beverage powder, confectionery, brewing and fermentation buyers. It is produced by extracting malted barley with water and then concentrating the extract to a syrup or drying it to a free-flowing powder. Being a cereal extract rather than a defined compound, it carries no single CAS number or formula.
Both traded forms sit on this page. Dried malt extract, also called DME, is a hygroscopic powder for dry mixes and sachet lines, while liquid malt extract is a viscous syrup metered straight into doughs, sauces and brewing vessels. Colour runs from pale or regular grades through to dark caramel types.
The second grade decision is enzyme activity. Diastatic material retains amylase activity that continues working on starch in a dough, and non-diastatic material contributes malt flavour, colour and fermentable solids without that action. Bakery, drink powder, confectionery, sauce, feed-coating and fermentation media applications all draw on one combination or another.
Send the form, colour grade, diastatic or non-diastatic status, application, quantity and delivery location with your enquiry. Availability, packing, documentation and delivery timing are confirmed with the quotation. Supply is subject to applicable requirements.

Malt Extract grades and forms
We supply several forms to suit different formulating and dosing setups. If you need a size that is not listed, ask us.
| Grade | Form | Assay | Typical use | Packing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dried malt extract powder, pale or regular colour | pale tan hygroscopic free-flowing powder | — | Dry bakery and biscuit mixes, malted drink powders and cereal blends where a dosable powder is preferred and only a light colour contribution is wanted. | Confirm the required powder pack format with the quotation. |
| Dried malt extract powder, dark or caramel colour | brown hygroscopic free-flowing powder | — | Powder blends that need a deeper malt colour and a more roasted flavour note, such as dark bread mixes, malted chocolate drinks and coating systems. | Confirm the required powder pack format with the quotation. |
| Liquid malt extract, pale | light amber viscous syrup | — | Bread and bun doughs, sauce and glaze systems and brewing work where a syrup is metered directly and a mild malt character is specified. | Confirm the required liquid pack format with the quotation. |
| Liquid malt extract, dark | dark brown viscous syrup | — | Dark breads, malt vinegar and sauce bases, confectionery and colour or flavour systems that want pronounced caramel and roasted notes. | Confirm the required liquid pack format with the quotation. |
| Diastatic malt extract | syrup or powder retaining enzyme activity | — | Doughs that use residual amylase activity to work on starch during fermentation. State the activity level the bakery process is built around. | Confirm the pack format with the quotation for the form selected. |
| Non-diastatic malt extract | syrup or powder with the enzyme activity deactivated | — | Applications wanting malt flavour, colour and fermentable solids without enzyme action, including drink powders, confectionery and cereal coatings. | Confirm the pack format with the quotation for the form selected. |

Specifications
| Parameter | Value | Method |
|---|---|---|
| Appearance | light amber to dark brown viscous syrup, or pale tan to brown free-flowing powder, according to the form and colour grade | — |
| Product type | aqueous extract of malted cereal, concentrated to a syrup or dried to a powder, so no single CAS number or molecular formula applies | — |
| Colour | grade dependent, from pale or regular through to dark caramel types; state the colour range the recipe is built around | — |
| Enzyme activity | diastatic or non-diastatic according to the grade selected | — |
| Moisture and hygroscopicity | the dried powder takes up moisture readily and needs sealed storage; the syrup is a high-solids concentrate | — |

Malt Extract applications
Safety and handling
Store sealed and cool. The dried powder is hygroscopic and will cake if it takes up humidity, while syrup grades thicken as they cool and are easier to pump when kept at a steady temperature. Handle as a food ingredient with suitable hygiene practice and follow the safety information for the grade quoted.
Common questions about malt extract
What is the difference between dried malt extract and liquid malt extract?
They are the same extract taken to a different concentration. Liquid malt extract is a high-solids syrup that is pumped or scooped, while dried malt extract is taken further to a hygroscopic powder that suits dry mixing and sachet filling. Dosing rates differ because the syrup carries more water.
What does diastatic mean on a malt extract specification?
A diastatic grade retains enzyme activity from the malt, so it continues to act on starch in a dough. A non-diastatic grade has that activity deactivated and contributes flavour, colour and fermentable solids only. Bakery processes are usually built around one or the other, so name which you need.
Is malt extract the same as maltodextrin?
No. Maltodextrin is a starch hydrolysate made from starch, with no malt flavour or colour, and it has its own page and specifications. Malt extract is an extract of malted cereal carrying malt flavour, colour and often enzyme activity. Order maltodextrin by name if that is what the recipe means.
Which colour grade of malt extract should I request?
Pale or regular grades suit light breads, biscuit doughs and drink powders where colour must stay subtle. Dark and caramel grades are chosen for dark breads, sauces, malt vinegar bases and confectionery that want a roasted character. Send the colour range or the reference material you currently use.
Can malt extract be used in brewing and fermentation media?
Yes. It supplies fermentable sugars and nitrogen for wort preparation where a producer does not mash grain on site, and it is a common carbon and nitrogen base for laboratory and industrial fermentation media. State the free amino nitrogen or solids figures your process specifies.
Does malt extract contain gluten-bearing cereal?
It is made from malted barley and other cereals, so it is a cereal-derived ingredient. Any allergen or dietary position has to come from the documentation for the specific material rather than from this page, so raise that requirement with the enquiry.
What details are needed for a malt extract price enquiry?
Give the form (powder or syrup), colour grade, diastatic or non-diastatic status, application, quantity and delivery location. Mention any solids, colour or activity limits and the documents you need so the quotation covers the full requirement.
