Fumed Silica Supplier in Malaysia

  • Also known as
  • Pyrogenic Silica
  • Fumed Silicon Dioxide
  • Colloidal Silicon Dioxide

Fumed silica supplier for resin, composite, adhesive, sealant, coating and powder-handling formulators in Malaysia. Also called pyrogenic silica or colloidal silicon dioxide, it is a flame-produced amorphous silicon dioxide with very high specific surface area and extremely low bulk density. Its work on a formulation is rheology control, thixotropy, anti-settling, anti-caking and reinforcement.

Grade selection turns on two things: the surface treatment and the surface area class. Hydrophilic untreated grades cover roughly the 130 to 380 m2/g classes and suit polar resins, water-containing systems and general thickening. Hydrophobic grades are surface-treated for water-resistant, non-polar and moisture-sensitive systems.

Fumed silica is a different product from precipitated silica and from silica gel, although all three are amorphous silicon dioxide. Precipitated silica is a wet-process powder for rubber reinforcement and carrier duties, and silica gel is a porous bead desiccant for humidity control. State the process form, surface treatment and surface area class so the quotation stays on fumed material.

Send the required grade or current equivalent, surface area class, quantity and delivery location with your enquiry. Availability, packing, documentation and delivery timing are confirmed with the quotation.

Fumed Silica applications

Safety and handling

Store sealed in a dry place. The powder has a very low bulk density and generates airborne dust readily, so control dust and use suitable extraction and personal protection when handling and dispersing it. Follow the safety information for the quoted grade. Supply is subject to applicable requirements.

Common questions about fumed silica

What is the difference between hydrophilic and hydrophobic fumed silica?

Hydrophilic grades are untreated and carry surface silanol groups, so they disperse and build viscosity well in polar resins and water-containing systems. Hydrophobic grades are surface-treated, usually with dimethyl or silane groups, so they resist water pickup and perform better in non-polar or moisture-sensitive systems such as silicone sealants and greases.

Is fumed silica the same as precipitated silica or silica gel?

No. All three are amorphous silicon dioxide, but fumed silica is made in a flame as sub-micron aggregates for rheology and reinforcement, precipitated silica is a wet-process powder used mainly as a rubber filler and carrier, and silica gel is a porous bead or sachet desiccant. Order each by name so the quotation lands on the right material.

Is colloidal silicon dioxide the same as fumed silica?

Yes. Colloidal silicon dioxide and pyrogenic silica are the pharmacopoeial and technical names for the same flame-produced amorphous powder. Note that a colloidal silica sol, which is silica dispersed in water, is a liquid product and not this powder, so state powder or dispersion when you enquire.

Which surface area class should I request?

If you already run a grade, quote its surface area class or the grade designation you buy against and the equivalent can be matched. For a new formulation, the lower classes around 130 to 200 m2/g are the usual starting point for resin and coating thickening, while the 300 to 380 m2/g classes give more thickening and reinforcement per kilogram.

How much fumed silica is needed to thicken a resin or coating?

Loadings are low, normally a small percentage by weight, and the exact figure depends on the resin, the solvent balance and the shear available for dispersion. Treat published figures as a starting point and confirm by trial in your own system, since dispersion energy affects the result as much as dosage.

Why does fumed silica take up so much space for its weight?

Bulk density is very low, so a kilogram occupies far more volume than a mineral filler of the same weight. Plan storage and handling around volume rather than tonnage, and expect dust control to matter during charging and dispersion.

What details are needed for a fumed silica price enquiry?

Provide the surface treatment, the surface area class or current grade equivalent, the application, quantity and delivery location. Add any required documentation and preferred pack format so the quotation covers the full requirement.
