Common questions about lithopone
Is lithopone the same as zinc oxide or barium sulphate?
No. Lithopone is a co-precipitated pigment in which zinc sulphide and barium sulphate are formed together as one material, so it is a different product from either component sold on its own and is ordered by name. If the formulation calls for one of the single materials instead, request that material by name so the correct item is quoted.
Is lithopone the same as Pigment White 5?
Yes. Pigment White 5, often shortened to PW5, is the Colour Index name for lithopone, and lithopone pigment is the same material described by function. The grade still has to be specified, because zinc sulphide content varies between types sold under that one Colour Index name.
What is lithopone B301?
B301 is a commercial grade code widely used in the lithopone trade for the lower zinc sulphide type, conventionally quoted at around 30 per cent zinc sulphide with barium sulphate making up the balance.
