What does petroleum ether 60-80 mean?
The numbers are the boiling range in degrees Celsius, so a 60-80 fraction distils mainly between 60 and 80 °C. Petroleum ether is sold by boiling range rather than by a single purity figure, and 60-80 is the fraction buyers name most often. Quote the range your method or process specifies.
Is petroleum ether the same as diethyl ether?
No. Despite the name, petroleum ether contains no ether group at all: it is a light petroleum distillate made up of aliphatic hydrocarbons. Diethyl ether is a single defined compound with very different volatility and solvent behaviour. Order whichever one your method actually names.
What is the difference between petroleum ether and hexane?
