Keep containers tightly closed in a cool, dry place away from oxidising agents, since tin(II) oxidises to tin(IV) in air and moisture, and the dihydrate takes up water. Solutions are acidic, attack many metals and lose strength as they age, so make them up in resistant equipment and use gloves and eye protection. Follow the safety information for the grade quoted.
Common questions about stannous chloride
Is stannous chloride the same as tin(II) chloride?
Yes. Tin(II) chloride is the systematic name, tin dichloride and SnCl2 refer to the same compound, and much of the trade simply says tin chloride. E512 is the additive number used when the material is supplied for food use.
What is the difference between stannous chloride and stannic chloride?
They are different products. Stannous chloride carries tin in the +2 oxidation state and behaves as a reducing agent, while stannic chloride is the tin(IV) compound with its own formula, physical state and handling. If a process calls for the tin(IV) material, order stannic chloride by name.
Should I order the dihydrate or the anhydrous form?
The dihydrate is the crystal or flake form usually traded and it dissolves readily for plating and analytical work. Anhydrous powder is chosen where water of crystallisation interferes with the reaction or where the charge is calculated on a strict anhydrous basis. State which basis your dosage figures assume.
Why do stannous chloride solutions go cloudy and lose strength?
Tin(II) oxidises to tin(IV) on contact with air and dilute solutions also hydrolyse, so a stored solution slowly turns hazy and reduces less. Working solutions are commonly acidified and made up close to the point of use, and a stabilised solution can be requested instead of crystals.
Which grade suits electroplating and electroless plating pretreatment?
