Styrene-isoprene-styrene block copolymer is a thermoplastic elastomer commonly abbreviated as SIS. Its soft isoprene blocks provide flexibility and tack, while the styrene end blocks provide physical reinforcement without conventional vulcanisation.
Commercial choices include linear, radial and oil-extended grades supplied as pellets, porous granules or crumb. Buyers normally compare styrene content, melt or solution behaviour, tensile properties, volatile matter and compatibility with tackifier oils and resins.
SIS is used in pressure-sensitive adhesives, hot-melt systems, tapes, labels, hygiene articles, sealants and flexible compounds. It is a separate polymer from SBS, SEBS and solid styrene-butadiene rubber, so those materials should not be treated as aliases or substitute grades.
