Common questions about lithium hydroxide
Is lithium hydroxide the same as lithium carbonate?
No. They are different lithium compounds with different chemistry and different uses, and lithium carbonate is not covered by this page. Lithium hydroxide is the alkali used to make lithium soap greases and certain cathode materials. State which compound you need in the enquiry.
Should I order the monohydrate or the anhydrous grade?
Most industrial buying is monohydrate, because that is the standard traded solid and it suits grease manufacture and general processing. Anhydrous material is chosen when the water carried by the monohydrate interferes, such as carbon dioxide absorption duty. Describe the process and we can confirm which form fits.
Can lithium hydroxide replace caustic soda or caustic potash?
Not as a general substitution. Lithium hydroxide is selected when the lithium ion itself matters, for example forming a lithium soap or a lithium salt, and it costs far more than sodium or potassium hydroxide. Where only alkalinity is needed, the cheaper caustics are usually the correct choice.
