Common questions about n-butanol
Is n-butanol the same as isobutanol?
No. n-Butanol is butan-1-ol, CAS 71-36-3, and isobutanol is the branched 2-methyl-1-propanol isomer. Their evaporation and solvency behaviour differs, so a formulation written for one will not perform on the other. Order the isomer the specification names, and enquire for isobutanol, sec-butanol or tert-butanol separately.
Are n-butanol, normal butanol and n-butyl alcohol one product?
Yes. n-Butanol, normal butanol, n-butyl alcohol, butan-1-ol, 1-butanol and the trade abbreviation NBA all mean the same material. Bare butyl alcohol is best avoided on an order because it does not say which of the four butanol isomers is required.
Which n-butanol grade should a coatings buyer request?
Technical grade covers most coatings, ink, adhesive and cleaner solvent duty. Where the resin system is moisture sensitive, request the reduced water limit, and where a purchasing specification already exists, send it so the quoted material is matched to that document.
