Isobutanol (Isobutyl Alcohol) Supplier in Malaysia
- Also known as
- Isobutyl Alcohol
- 2-Methyl-1-Propanol
- IBA
- 2-Methylpropan-1-Ol
Isobutanol supplier Malaysia for coatings, ink, cleaning and chemical intermediate buyers. Also sold as isobutyl alcohol and written as 2-methyl-1-propanol on a datasheet, it is the branched four-carbon alcohol under CAS 78-83-1 and formula C4H10O. It is a different isomer from n-butanol and it is not butyl glycol.
Commercial trade runs on a technical liquid grade normally quoted at 99% minimum, supplied drummed, in IBC or in bulk. Buyers separate offers on assay and on the water, colour and acidity limits rather than on grade names. Intermediate work usually specifies tighter limits than solvent blending does.
Formulators use isobutanol as a medium-evaporating solvent and latent solvent in paints, lacquers, inks and nitrocellulose or amino resin systems, and as a flow additive that helps control blush. It also goes into industrial and metal cleaners, isobutyl ester manufacture, flotation reagents, extraction duty and oilfield process chemicals.
Send the assay and specification limits, quantity and delivery location with your enquiry. Availability, pack format, documentation and timing are settled at quotation. Supply is subject to applicable requirements.

Isobutanol grades and forms
We supply several forms to suit different formulating and dosing setups. If you need a size that is not listed, ask us.
| Grade | Form | Assay | Typical use | Packing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Technical isobutanol | clear, colourless liquid | commercial material is normally quoted at 99% minimum | General solvent duty in paints, coatings, inks, lacquers and industrial cleaning, where a medium-evaporating alcohol is wanted. State the assay and water limits the formulation works to. | Drum, IBC or bulk road tanker, matched to the quantity at quotation. |
| Isobutanol for intermediate and process use | clear, colourless liquid | — | Feedstock for isobutyl esters such as isobutyl acetate, plus extraction, flotation and oilfield process duty. Send the colour, water and acidity limits that matter, since intermediate work is usually tighter than solvent blending. | Drum, IBC or bulk road tanker, matched to the quantity at quotation. |

Isobutanol applications
Safety and handling
Isobutanol is a flammable liquid with a characteristic alcohol odour. Keep containers closed in a cool, well-ventilated store away from heat, sparks, open flame, oxidisers and strong acids, use bonded and earthed transfer, and work to the safety data issued for the grade quoted. Flash point, classification and shelf life are read from that data rather than from this page. Supply is subject to applicable requirements.
Common questions about isobutanol
Is isobutanol the same as isobutyl alcohol?
Yes, the same material. Isobutanol is the shorter trade name and isobutyl alcohol is the older one, with 2-methyl-1-propanol as the systematic form on a datasheet. All three sit under CAS 78-83-1, so any of them can be used on an enquiry.
What is the difference between isobutanol and n-butanol?
They are different isomers and separate products. Isobutanol is branched, so it evaporates a little faster and has a lower solvency for some resins, while n-butanol is the straight-chain alcohol and has its own page here. A blend written for one is not swapped for the other, so order by name.
Is isobutanol the same as sec-butanol, tert-butanol or butyl glycol?
No. Sec-butanol and tert-butanol are further butanol isomers with their own properties, and butyl glycol, or 2-butoxyethanol, is a glycol ether rather than a simple alcohol and has its own page. Each is a different product with its own specification.
Why is isobutanol used as a latent solvent in coatings?
In nitrocellulose and amino resin systems the alcohol is not a true solvent on its own but raises the solvency of the active solvent it is blended with, which lets a formulator hold viscosity down. Its evaporation rate also helps control blush and surface defects.
Does isobutanol mix with water?
Only partly, unlike methanol or ethanol. That limited miscibility is the reason it suits extraction duty and solvent blends that have to tolerate some water, and it is worth stating in the enquiry if it matters to the process.
How do I get an isobutanol price in Malaysia?
Send the assay and specification limits, the quantity and the delivery location, and say whether drums, IBC or bulk is preferred. Isobutanol is quoted on enquiry with a stated validity period rather than carried as a published list price.
