Phthalic anhydride is the upstream raw material for unsaturated polyester and alkyd resins, phthalate plasticiser esters, polyester polyols, and anthraquinone and phthalocyanine dyes. It is not phthalic acid, and it is not a finished plasticiser such as DOP or DBP. Those esters are made from it and are ordered as separate products.

Common questions about phthalic anhydride
Is phthalic anhydride the same as phthalic acid?
No. Phthalic anhydride is the cyclic anhydride and reacts as an anhydride in resin and ester manufacture. Water converts it to phthalic acid, which is a separate commercial product. Order phthalic acid by name if that is what the process needs.
Is phthalic anhydride the same as DOP or another phthalate plasticiser?
No. Plasticisers such as DOP, DINP, DIDP and DBP are esters manufactured from phthalic anhydride and an alcohol. This page covers the upstream anhydride raw material, so request the finished plasticiser separately if that is the requirement.
What is the difference between phthalic anhydride and maleic anhydride?
