Activated bleaching earth supplier for palm oil, edible oil, oleochemical and oil re-refining plants in Malaysia. Known in the trade as bleaching earth, bleaching clay or activated clay, it is an acid-activated adsorbent clay charged at the bleaching stage of refining.
Its job is adsorption, not filtration. In one contact step it strips colour bodies, phospholipids, residual soaps, oxidation products and trace metals so the oil deodorises to specification afterwards. That makes it a different product from the mineral filter aids used to clarify the same oil.
Grades are separated by activation level, from natural and low-activation material through standard grades to highly activated clays, with neutral low-acidity grades for oils that react to residual acidity. Free acidity, moisture, particle grading, oil retention and cake filtration rate are the parameters that decide the choice. A stronger grade is not automatically the cheaper one once retained oil and press time are counted.

Safety and handling
Keep bags closed, dry and off the floor, because absorbed moisture reduces adsorption capacity before the clay reaches the press. Control dust at charging and slurry-mixing points and use eye protection and a suitable mask. Oil-wet spent cake behaves differently from fresh product and is handled under the refinery's own procedures. Supply is subject to applicable requirements.
Common questions about bleaching earth
What is activated bleaching earth used for?
It is the adsorbent charged at the bleaching stage of oil and fat refining. In a single contact step it removes colour bodies, phospholipids, residual soaps, oxidation products, trace metals and some contaminants, which is why the bleached oil then deodorises cleanly. Palm and palm kernel oil refining is the largest use in this region.
Is bleaching earth the same as bentonite?
No. Bentonite is the raw mined clay; bleaching earth is a processed adsorbent made by treating a clay with acid, washing and drying it to open up surface area and adsorption capacity. The refining performance comes from that processing, so order each one by name and state the grade.
Is bleaching earth the same as fuller's earth?
The two terms overlap but they are not equivalent. Fuller's earth is an old trade label stretched across a range of adsorbent clays, and a large share of the demand behind it today is cosmetic and consumer. A refinery buying an adsorbent should ask for bleaching earth by name and state the activation level, so nobody quotes a face-mask clay against a bleaching duty.
How do I choose an activation level?
Work from the oil rather than from the grade names. A dark or difficult feedstock and a tight colour target push towards a highly activated grade, while a pre-treated or light oil is often handled on standard or low-activation material. Send the current and target colour, dosage and temperature, and a trial on your own oil settles it.
Does a stronger grade always work out cheaper?
Not necessarily. A more active clay usually reaches the colour target at a lower dosage, but it can carry higher residual acidity, retain more oil in the cake and slow the press. The real comparison is clay cost plus retained oil loss plus cycle time, which is why refiners trial two grades side by side.
Do you supply spent bleaching earth or handle its disposal?
No. Spent bleaching earth is the oil-wet by-product leaving the filter press after bleaching, and it is a separate material from the fresh adsorbent quoted here. Enquiries on this page are answered as fresh product; spent cake handling stays with the refinery and its own arrangements.
Why is no CAS number or formula published for this product?
Because it is a processed mineral, not a defined chemical substance. The clay base differs between producers and the activation route changes the finished material, so a single registry number or formula would misdescribe what arrives.
