Epoxidised soya bean oil is a bio-based secondary plasticiser and heat stabiliser for flexible PVC, bought in Malaysia by compounders, film and sheet producers and cable makers. It is also written epoxidized soybean oil and shortened to ESBO or ESO (CAS 8013-07-8). Epoxidising the double bonds of refined soya bean oil leaves a pale yellow viscous liquid additive, not an edible oil.

Oxirane oxygen content is the parameter buyers name first, because the epoxy groups carry both the plasticising and the acid-scavenging duty. Iodine value shows how much unsaturation survived the reaction, with colour, acid value and viscosity behind it. Standard, high-oxirane, low-colour and epoxy modifier grades are all traded, so state the oxirane minimum your formulation works to.

In flexible PVC it sits beside a primary plasticiser and the calcium-zinc or other stabiliser system, taking up hydrogen chloride released during processing. Epoxy coating and adhesive formulators use the same oxirane groups as a reactive diluent and flexibiliser.

Is epoxidised soya bean oil the same as soya bean oil?

No. The double bonds of refined soya bean oil have been converted to epoxy groups, which turns an edible oil into a PVC additive with acid-scavenging capacity. The unmodified oil is a separate product on its own page, so order each material by name.

What does ESBO do in a flexible PVC compound?

It works on two fronts. As a secondary plasticiser it softens the compound alongside the primary plasticiser, and as a co-stabiliser it takes up hydrogen chloride released during processing and service, supporting the calcium-zinc or other stabiliser package rather than replacing it.

Which oxirane oxygen level should I specify?

Oxirane oxygen is the epoxy content available for scavenging and reaction, so a higher figure gives more stabilising capacity at the same addition rate. It is not a phthalate itself, which is why non-phthalate compound designs often carry it.

Is it the same as epoxidised linseed oil or epoxidised palm oil?

No. Those are epoxidised from different feedstocks and behave differently in oxirane content, colour and viscosity, so they are separate products. Order the one your specification names rather than treating epoxidised vegetable oils as interchangeable.
