Common questions about polystyrene
What is the difference between GPPS and HIPS?
GPPS is the standard clear, rigid polystyrene family and is chosen for clarity, stiffness and straightforward moulding. HIPS is rubber modified, which trades some transparency and stiffness for better impact resistance. Choose between them from the part's appearance, toughness and processing requirements rather than from the acronym alone.
Is expandable polystyrene the same as ordinary polystyrene pellets?
They share a polystyrene base, but the supplied forms and processing routes differ. GPPS and HIPS pellets are melted for injection moulding, extrusion or thermoforming. Expandable polystyrene is supplied as beads that are expanded and steam moulded into lightweight foam parts.
Which polystyrene grade suits injection moulding or thermoforming?
